The Meaning of

愛 (Ài) — Love. The traditional character contains 心 (heart) in its center, surrounded by elements suggesting care and connection. In simplified Chinese, the heart was removed. We write only the traditional form — because love without a heart is just a word.

How This Piece Was Created

Love in Chinese is not abstract. The traditional form 愛 contains the character for heart (心) at its center — love has a heart, or it is not love. Master Du used a blend of standard and running script, keeping the form legible while allowing the brush to dance. The ink is slightly diluted, giving the strokes a warm, grayish tone — like old love letters.
