Inquire About This PieceThe Meaning of 和
和 (Hé) — Harmony. The character combines two elements: 禾 (grain) and 口 (mouth). To the ancient Chinese, harmony meant everyone having enough to eat. Over millennia, it evolved to mean peace, balance, and the ideal state of human relations. Confucius called it the highest virtue.
How This Piece Was Created
This piece was created on a summer morning in Yantai. The ink was ground for 30 minutes before the first stroke touched the paper. Master Du chose a wolf-hair brush for its spring and responsiveness — the same type of brush used by Song Dynasty scholars a thousand years ago.
