The Meaning of 厚德载物
厚德载物 (Hòu dé zài wù) — from the I Ching (Book of Changes), one of the oldest Chinese classics. It means: the earth is thick with virtue, and so it carries all things. The phrase teaches that true leadership is not about power but about character. A mountain does not demand respect; it earns it by being unmovable. This is the motto of countless Chinese scholars, officials, and business leaders.
How This Piece Was Created
This horizontal composition required a different kind of discipline. Each character must stand alone yet flow into the next — a visual rhythm that echoes the meaning. Madame Zhang used semi-cursive script: the structure of standard script keeps it legible, while the cursive elements give it movement and life. The four characters were written in sequence without pause, like four notes of a chord.
