The Meaning of 如意
如意 (Rúyì) — literally 'as you wish.' The phrase is a shorthand for 万事如意 (wànshì rúyì): 'may ten thousand things go as you wish.' It is the most versatile blessing in Chinese — appropriate for weddings, birthdays, housewarmings, or any new beginning. The ruyi scepter, a curved ceremonial object, is named after this phrase and symbolizes power, authority, and the fulfillment of wishes.
How This Piece Was Created
Madame Zhang wrote this on a quiet afternoon in her Yantai studio, using a wolf-hair brush with ink ground by hand for 30 minutes. The first character 如 is written with restraint and precision; the second 意 opens up with more freedom — as if the wish itself unfolds as the brush moves. The composition took over an hour, each stroke meditated before landing.
